BUSINESSMEN who are into agriculture are encouraged to invest in poultry and livestock in Davao because of the region's strong export potential.

Teresita M. Pascual, president and chief operating officer of Mahayag Country Farms, told Sun.Star Davao that Mindanao is still free from foot and mouth disease, and bird flu, making it a good time to invest in the industry.

Pascual, who is also the farm administrator of Cecilia Stock Farms, said the current state of the poultry and livestock industry in Mindanao gives it an edge compared to the other areas in the country.

She said the Philippines, being an archipelago, prevents the contamination among poultry and livestock products.

Pascual said the Asean Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 will open big opportunities for local players, particularly to export to Malaysian and Singaporean markets.

Taiwan, Japan, and the Middle East are also potential export markets.

"Taiwan, which is an industrialized country, is looking into the Philippines as a source of their poultry and livestock products," she said, adding that local players should tap into these.

However, with the free flow of trade during the AEC 2015, industry players should remain vigilant to ensure that the stocks in the region and island are kept away from diseases or contaminants.

Pascual said it is important for industry players to step their biosecurity measures up to remain competitive and to have high quality products.

This also means investing in laboratories that will monitor the quality of poultry and livestock to prevent contamination of diseases.

She also urged the government to entertain investments not only in poultry and livestock but also in food production.

Pascual said the government should invest in farm to market roads to help lessen the costs of products and for better transportation of products and raw materials.

"We are capable of exporting and are ready to produce these products," Pascual said. (Reuel John F. Lumawag)
