THE geo-hazard assessment and mapping for Davao Region is already 85 percent complete and is targeted to be finished within this year.

Noel B. Angeles, officer-in-charge of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Davao Region, who guested in Friday's Kapihan sa PIA, said the geo-hazard map will be in the scale of 1:10,000.

He said they are presently conducting geo-hazard mapping on Samal island, the municipalities of Padada and Kibalawan in Davao del Sur, in Sto. Tomas in Davao del Norte, and two districts of Davao City -- from Bunawan to Lasang to Cabantian.

Angeles also said the digitization of the geo-hazard maps is already 60 percent complete, but they will be outsourcing the remaining of the digitization since they do not have the needed technology.

Flood prone, liquefaction prone, and landslide prone areas are some of the inclusion in the geohazard map.

According to MGB, the purpose of the mapping is to identify where significant geologic and seismic hazards exist or are likely to exist so that informed land use and emergency response planning decisions can be made.
