Davao City Marissa S. Abella is pushing for the strengthening of the organic farming industry in the city in preparation for the upcoming 2015 Asean Economic Covergence (AEC).
"Among the agricultural products that need to be strengthened are our organic products because we are ahead when it comes to organic production and policy," said Abella, who is also head of the Committee on Agriculture and Food, in her message during the 2014 Farmers and Fisherfolks Month celebration at the regional office of the Department of Agriculture on Monday.
She said Republic Act No. 10068 or the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010 and the city's Organic Agriculture Ordinance of Davao City 2009 gives the city an edge when it comes to organic farming.
Abella said going organic is now a growing trend among consumers. For example, health conscious individuals are going into juicing wherein they prefer organic fruits and vegetables that are juicier compared to non-organic fruits and vegetables.
Abella said farmers should not only practice organic farming on crops and fruits but also on livestocks.
She is also pushing for the establishment of an organic center in Paquibato district that will teach and inform farmers on the latest organic farming techniques and good practices.
Abella said they will continue to develop policies, projects, and programs that will enhance and develop the organic farming industry of the city.
