THE regional office of the Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA 11) is gearing up for the possible onset of El Nino this year.
DA 11 assistant regional director Maria Febe T. Orbe, DA 11 officer-in-charge assistant regional director, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said the regional office has prepared an action plan in case El Ni¤o pushes through this year.
"DA 11 regional director Remelyn Recoter has called on all the coordinators in different provinces of the region to prepare us for El Nino," she said.
Orbe said attached agencies of DA 11 also met to identify what actions should be taken once the weather phenomenon hits.
For instance, one of the interventions they are looking into is cloud seeding, which will be implemented by the Bureau of Water and Soil Management.
Orbe said before they can request a cloud seeding activity from the bureau, they have to closely coordinate with local government units to determine which of their areas need water.
She said they can't just cloud seed in a certain area because there are some crops that do not enjoy too much rain.
She also cited the provision of shallow tubes and water pumps so that farmers may get water from a nearby source; the introduction of drought resistant varieties; and crop diversification.
Earlier, Armanda C. Angsinco, Regional Agriculture and Fichery Council 11 (RAFC 11) vice-chairperson, said they are projecting agricultural and fisheries production to drop by 20%, which is just a conservative estimate.
He pointed out that the intense heat brought by the weather phenomenon will dry up fish ponds and will limit the capability of irrigation systems in the region.
