Mindanao hog, poultry products can compete in Asean markets-A A +A

BEING free from Avian Flu and Foot and Mouth disease (FMB), Mindanao's hog and poultry products have the advantage over other Asean markets when the sub-region's integration takes place in 2015.
This actually makes producers from Mindanao to compete well when the Asean Economic Community opens next year.
Department of Agriculture (DA)-Davao Director Remelyn Recoter, in a message read by Assistant Director Maria Febe Orbe in Friday's opening of Davao Agriculture and Livestock Expo at SMX Convention Center Davao, said that Mindanao, being free from avian flu and FMB gives farmers a great advantage over other neighboring countries to export hog and poultry products.
"With the avian flu- and FMB-free status of Mindanao, our products can move freely in the international market," she said.
Some countries in Southeast Asia have been hit by the dreadful disease. In fact, local hog and poultry raisers in Mindanao sought a temporary restraining order from Supreme Court against Thailand-based Charoen Pokphand, which is operating in Tarlac, last year.
The agribusiness firm is into production of animal feed, meat and food products. But local farmers expressed fear that the company might not be free from those diseases and contaminate local hogs and swines especially those coming from Mindanao.
Recoter said that DA-Davao is not only working towards addressing the problem on food security but also on the sanitary standards in food production.
The department also has value chain analysis that allows farmers to look into the product's end-market -- constraints and solutions -- for Asean integration.
For his part, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industries Inc. president Antonio dela Cruz recognized farmers' role in agriculture, saying "agriculture is poised to make a big impact as economic driver in 2015 Asean."
He added the private sector is throwing its all out support for agriculture, tourism, and Information and Communications Technology, citing also the public sector's role in assisting them on their endeavors.
