THE City Agriculturist Office (CAO) distributed some 9,000 cacao seedlings to farmers in Marilog District in a bid to boost and develop the cacao industry in Davao City.

CAO assistant head Roselio Tabay said the seedlings were given out on Wednesday to 80 beneficiaries of the farmers' association in Opian, Marilog. The seedlings were produced at the city-run nursery in Malagos.

He said the seedlings will be planted by end of this month, as they are still preparing the land where these will be planted Tabay said the seedlings will bear fruits in two year's time.

The released seedlings were the first batch of CAO's program on cacao development, with more farmers from 25 barangays in Paquibato and Marilog who are yet to receive support from the City Government.

Earlier, the city has strengthened its support for the cacao industry after seeing its potential in helping farmers get a better livelihood.

The official said recently that his office has proposed P10 million additional funding, which is enough to support cacao farmers in a 310-hectare cacao plantation in the city.

The city has around 2,800 hectares of cacao plantation providing livelihood to some 4,000 farmers.
