THE 2014 International Banana Symposium will highlight this year's Davao Trade Expo (Date), slated on November 19 to 22 at the SMX Convention Center Davao at SM Lanang Premier.

In a press briefer, the international symposium is brought in to the city with the partnership between Bioversity International, International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP), and Banana Asia Pacific Network (BAPNET).

Luciano Frederick P. Puyod III, who was a guest in yesterday's edition of the Club 888 forum at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao, said they want to focus once again on banana industry, being the biggest agricultural commodity that is produced and exported from Davao region.

He said local and international speakers will grace the event to discuss topics on the latest research and developments, marketing strategies, logistics, pests and disease management, climate change, and other trends and issues of the banana industry.

"The Date 2014 will serve as an avenue for us to assist the banana farmers. We are now going global that is why we are also bringing in international speakers," said Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industries Inc. (DCCCII) president Antonio T. dela Cruz.

Some topics to be discussed in the symposium are "Market Opportunities for Other Banana Varieties", "Technological Advances in Plantation Management", "Climate Change and Its Impact on the Banana Industry", "Breeding a Better Banana Variety", Corporate Social Responsibility in the Banana Industry, and Fusarium Wilt Management, among others.

Puyod said they are expecting some 300 foreign and local delegates to attend the symposium, which was held in Kaosiung City, Taiwan in 2012.
Date 2014, dubbed as "Davao: From Local Agriculture to Global Agribusiness", will feature some 200 exhibitors mostly coming from the agri-trade and agri-industrial sectors.

Organizers are expecting some 7,000 visitors from different provinces and cities to take part in Date 2014.

He also said estimated sales from the event this year is expected to reach more than the sales generated in Date 2010 amounting to P117 million where banana was also the highlight.

Agriculture secretary Proceso Alcala will be expected to grace the opening of the Date 2014 while Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte will be the guest of honor.

Business matching, networking night, and farm tours are among the activities that have been lined up for Date 2014.

The trade expo is a flagship event of DCCCII in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Science and Technology (DOST), City Government of Davao, International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI), Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association Inc. (PBGEA), Mindanao Banana Farmers and Exporters Association (MBFEA), Bioversity International, INIBAP, and BAPNET.
