AN executive of Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) encouraged application developers present in a major technology exposition held recently in Shanghai, to collaborate with Filipinos to create more apps that are relevant to the Philippine market.

Smart developer evangelist Paul Pajo addressed an audience of Asian and European developers at the GSMA's Mobile Asia Expo and said that they could localize their apps for the Philippines' 100-million strong English-speaking market.

Pajo said these developers could also learn a lot from Filipino app makers' experience in producing apps for "social good".

Through hackathons or coding marathons organized and supported by the Smart Developer Network (Smart DevNet), Pinoys have created apps that help people prepare for disasters, improve rice research and science, and promote government transparency, among others.

At the sidelines of the expo, Pajo said foreign developers could get inspiration from the "apptivism" displayed by their local counterparts.

"On the other hand, Filipino developers can enhance their skills even further by working with developers from other parts of the world," he said.

Pajo was among the experts invited to speak at the GSMA@AppPlanet portion of the Mobile Asia Expo which attracted more than 26,000 technology executives and enthusiasts from 93 countries and territories. Other speakers of GSMA@AppPlanet included representatives from Intel and Mozilla.

The GSMA is a global organization of about a thousand mobile operators and companies in the broader mobile ecosystem.
