WHEN a door closes, a window opens-- as well as boxes of rocky road brownies, cream cheese brownies, oatmeal and red velvet bars, choco fudge and cheesecakes.

It was not easy for Rechie Salvador "Chieb" P. Elizalde, a native of Tago, Surigao del Sur, to land a job after college in 2012.

Elizalde, a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication graduate of Ateneo de Davao University, is the owner of Real Confections Cakes and Pastries.
When not a single company called him for a job interview, he decided to set up a small business, instead.

"My business is an online selling of pastries and cakes. I also do consignments in some coffee shops here in Davao City, such as Crazy Wraps Cafe located on Tionkost. I also make custom cakes such as fondant and icing cakes," he said.

The young entrepreneur's products are cakes like red velvet, tiramisu and moist chocolate worth P500 to P650, brownies like as rocky road, cream cheese, oatmeal, choco fudge and red velvet bars with prices between P165 to P195, and best-seller cheesecakes (P230 to P270).

What sets Real Confections apart from other pastry shops is that they offer buy-one-take-one promos for brownies and cheesecakes.

They also sell fondant cakes worth P900 to P1850 for one layer, or depending to their client’s budget.

Elizalde promotes his products through Facebook and satisfied client referrals.

A customer or a netizen orders online through their Facebook account and gets the orders at Kitchen Pantry on Acacia St., corner Villa Abrille St. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

"I researched on the internet how to start a food business, a restaurant maybe," he said.

He thought of putting up a restaurant since he loves cooking, but the business would require him a bigger capital outlay.

"So I switched and watched baking instructional videos on YouTube. I found it interesting. What I did next was I searched recipes for baking. Luckily, the ingredients are just affordable," he said.

But he said he did not have the money to buy the ingredients so he borrowed P800, which he used as his capital, from his friend and business consultant Datu Rejemil 'Nick' Mahadali.

"We had an agreement that if the baking would be successful, I'd give the trial cupcakes to him. So, he allowed me to borrow money and I started buying the ingredients," he said.

"Luckily, my first attempt was successful. When Nick and my brother tasted it, they were impressed. They said that I should bake more because they would let their workmates also taste the cupcakes, which was our first product," he added.

From then, their friends started ordering from him.

He decided to apply for a business permit in 2013, created an official Facebook page and received orders from Davao City-based netizens.

Elizalde said he started doing meet-ups with his clients in malls and did some deliveries although it was hard for him to attract customers at first.

"In the first months, I only received few orders like three or five boxes a day. It was not bad though," Elizalde said.

"I could still remember the days when I had to wake up as early as 4 a.m. just to finish all the orders and leave house at 9 a.m. for meet ups at malls. I experienced being scolded by mall guards because they would prohibit anyone to market personal products inside but I did not give up," he said.

Presently, Elizalde has personal assistants.

From three orders before, they now deliver "thousands" of boxes of brownies, cheesecakes cupcakes and cakes.

"Five years from now, I want to put up multiple branches of Real Confections around the metro and other cities. I want to hire more employees who can be of help to my business. I also want to help them and train them, to become good bakers also,” he said.

Elizalde also recognizes Mahadali's help which has contributed a lot to the success of his business.

“He is always a part of the Real Confections," he said.

The success of Real Confections has made his life sweeter and better.
