Butane dealers told to secure biz permit

SELLERS and suppliers of brand new butane canisters are now required to secure a business permit before they can place these products up for sale.

This developed after Mayor Rodrigo Duterte issued Executive Order (EO) 23 on May 9, which strictly prohibits selling of refilled liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in canisters.

Business Bureau officer-in-charge Lawrence Bantiding said this merchandise poses risks to consumers, as these may explode because the canisters are not designed to be thick enough for LPG refill.

The official added they require the sellers of brand new butane canisters to secure a standards compliance certificate from the Department of Energy (DOE) before the bureau can issue a business permit.

Failure to abide with EO's provisions, the bureau will confiscate the illegal merchandise and the business will face revocation of business permits and possible closure.

"We discourage the public from patronizing refilled LPG in canisters because these are dangerous, considering that LPG has higher condensation and the explosion is going to be strong," he said.

According to him, refilling is done outside the city. Monitoring will conduct inspection at the markets where most of those who sell the LPG refilled canisters are monitored.

He also cited DOE as saying that there's no refilling station of butane in the Philippines.
