Davao gears up for Asean integration-A A +A

THE Regional Development Council (RDC) in Davao Region has created a committee on Asean Economic Community (AEC) to ensure that the region is prepared for the integration starting next year.
"In preparing for the AEC in 2015, a special committee on AEC [has been established] to address issues and concerns affecting the region's industries and human resources that will result from this integration," said Davao del Norte Gov. Rudolfo del Rosario, RDC chair, in Tuesday's edition of Tagum Biz Talk at Big 8 Hotel, Tagum City.
National Economic Development Authority (Neda) regional director Maria Lourdes D. Lim, RDC vice-chair, said the committee was launched in June and has identified certain issues and concerns that will be addressed while the region is preparing for the AEC.
She said one of the challenges that will be faced is the single market of the AEC and in order to overcome this there is the need to identify the winners, either commodities or services that will be globally competitive.
Lim also said that there is a need to improve the quality of graduates and professionals for them to be competitive in the AEC.
"Mobility of trade, commodities, and our professionals would be the area of focus of the committee," she said, adding that other focus areas and agendas have already been laid out for the whole year.
The committee is chaired by Neda with various government agencies like the Department of Agriculture, Department of Trade and Industry, Bureau of Customs, and Commission on Higher Education, among others, as members.
"It is composed of important agencies that are necessary in promoting our trade and the mobility of our graduates," Lim said.
Lim said whether the body will be a permanent group under the RDC or not, it has yet to be decided upon.
"Because if we say that we still need some measures to prepare ourselves from 2015 and beyond, that special committee will continue to exist given the directions of the development council," she said.
