MORE than 700 participants joined the 1st National Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Summit last August 20 to 21, 2014 at the SMX Covention Center at SM Lanang Premier.
"The staging of the summit was successful in a sense that we were able to get the interest of the MSMEs from all over the country," Ma. Belenda Q. Ambi, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 officer-in-charge said in a phone interview.
The number even exceeded its target of 500 to 600 MSMEs.
Ambi also said the summit other two trade fairs, the Great Mindanao Food Fair at the Abreeza Mall and the Mindanao Crafts and Cultural Village at the SM Lanange Premier, were also successful, generating more than P3 million in sales. Of which, P1 million were cash sales while the P2 million were negotiated sales.
There were 20 exhibitors at the Great Mindanao Food Fair and 34 booths at the Mindanao Crafts and Cultural Village.
Ambi pointed out that the MSMEs who displayed their products earned positive feedback from buyers that many of their products were sold out.
National MSME Development Council vice chair and private sector representative Mary Ann M. Montemayor, in a separate interview, said participants came from as far as Aparri in the north and Jolo in the south.
"Because of its success many are clamoring for a restaging of the summit. Other areas are already bidding for it," she said.
Ambi said that they are suggesting to future organizers to come up with a focused topic on a certain sector, trends, or industry like a National MSME Summit devoted for youth entrepreneurs, women, or on social entrepreneurship.
Ambi and Montemayor attributed the success of the event to the team work of the organizing committee.
The National MSME Summit is co-organized by DTI and the National MSME Development Council. The summit was graced by DTI Secretary Gregory L. Domingo and Senator Paolo Benigno "Bam" A. Aquino IV.
This year's summit centered on the theme "Philippine MSMEs: Beating Challenges...Accelerating Innovations." The summit featured topics on MSMEs preparing and gearing up for the global market particularly for the Asean Economic Community in 2015.
