THE Provincial Government of Davao Oriental is seeking P25-million funding from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza) for the development and conservation of the Unesco heritage site Mt. Hamiguitan.

In a phone interview, Davao Oriental Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon said the P15 million of the proposed funding will be allocated to the local government unit (LGU) of San Isidro and P5 million each for Governor Generoso and Mati City.

She said this will be utilized for the establishment and the development of tourism centers at the buffer zones of Mt. Hamiguitan.

Malanyaon said they defended their application for the funding last week, which was positively received by the members of the Tieza board.

She said the development of the tourism centers will be done in different phases. For example, the first phase will include the establishment of an interpretation or interpretive center in the two towns and one city. The tourism centers will also include a research center wherein researchers and scientists can do their research on the data they gathered from the mountain.

Malanyaon said since they will not be opening the site to the public, the interpretation center will serve as venue for tourists to know about the mountain. They will only be allowing researchers or scientists to enter the mountain for research purposes only.

She said the construction of interpretation centers is one of components they adopted from other Unesco heritage site models. This will help conserve the site and at the same time provide the needed information to its tourists.

Malanyaon said they have also laid down the blueprint for the development of Mt. Hamiguitan with its Comprehensive Development Plan.

Aside from the requested funding from Tieza, the provincial government has also allocated P10 million to kick-off the development of the tourism centers in Mt. Hamiguitan. Some P5 million will go to San Isidro and P2.5 million each for Governor Generoso and Mati City.
