Martial Law takes toll on travel agency

Saturday, June 17, 2017

HOUSE of Travel, Inc., a registered travel agency at Damosa Complex experienced booking cancellations and fewer flights booked following the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao.

“About 30 to 40 percent from the bookings to Davao by the end of May were cancelled. Since we were also a partner in the Visit Davao Fun Sale consortium with the Department of Tourism (DOT), in those events alone, a lot had cancelled. Although several groups still came, still there were a lot who cancelled due to security reasons,” Domestic Ticketing and Reservation Staff Jennifer Cañeda said in vernacular, adding all of the cancellations so far were not re-booked to later schedules.

When asked how their flight booking performance is doing now three weeks after the declaration, Cañeda said it is still a little slow compared to June last year specifically the flights to Davao City from Luzon or Visayas.

“Actually, June and July are really lean seasons for any travel agencies but if we compare it with last year, the effect is really apparent,” she said.
Cañeda said to make sure less people are to cancel flights and to encourage more to come to Mindanao, especially Davao Region, they try to make their clients and passengers understand that peace and order situation in the region is being taken care of.

“Although we cannot force them to really come here, we just make them understand that the situation here in Davao is not really that bad. Hopefully, we can still get more flights in the future,” Cañeda said.
She also added flights from Davao to other parts of the country, with normal booking frequencies now, are not as affected as those flights coming in to the city.

House of Travel, Inc. is an International Air Transport Association (IATA)-accredited travel agency which was first established October 1958. It has offices in Manila, Cagayan de Oro, and Davao City.

Their offered services include arranging corporate travels, worldwide and local tour packages, international and domestic ticketing, passport and visa processing and assistance, hotel and resort bookings, and international cruise packages among others.
