QATAR Airways, one of the big three Gulf carries from the Middle East, announced that Davao City and Cebu City are among the 16 new destinations that it will launch flights to between 2018 to 2019.
This was revealed by Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker during a press conference on Wednesday at the ITB Berlin, the world’s largest international travel fair.
However, it was not mentioned by the airline when specifically in 2018 or 2019 it will launch flights to Davao City and Cebu City.
“Qatar Airways is tremendously excited to announce further expansion with a significant number of new destinations to be added to our extensive global network throughout 2018 and 2019," said Baker in a statement.
In a press statement released by the airline on their website, other routes that will be launched by the airline include Luxembourg; London Gatwick, United Kingdom; Cardiff, United Kingdom; Lisbon, Portugal; Tallinn, Estonia; Valletta, Malta; Langkawi, Malaysia; Da Nang, Vietnam; Bodrum, Antalya and Hatay, Turkey; Mykonos and Thessaloniki, Greece; and Málaga, Spain.
"This is a direct reflection of our commitment to connecting travelers across all corners of the world in a way that is meaningful and convenient to them. We are committed to continuing our ambitious growth strategy, in order to be able to provide our passengers with as much choice as possible and to take them anywhere in the world they wish to go,” Baker said.
In a message to SunStar Davao, Davao City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO) head Generose Tecson said, "I do hope that this will happen soon. It will help open up Davao to the rest of the world."
"It's opportune that Dusit Thani is scheduled to open this year. Besides Dabawenyos have the ability to adapt and raise the quality of their services. We'll have to identify establishments which are halal or pork free for the convenience of our tourists," she said when asked about how the city will deal with the possible influx of Muslim and upperclass tourists coming from the rich Middle Eastern nation of Qatar.
