Busto: A farcical life

AMONG the famous lines in the feel good movie with award winning Tom Hanks was that of life likened to a box of chocolates where one would never know what would get. And so that is what I also thought of when I heard about the sad news on the sudden demise of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

Who would have thought Michael Jackson would die so soon considering he was, like his millions of fans, looking forward to his comeback tour in London? Who would have thought that the King of Pop was that wasted in real life? While most fans know he had a colorful and bizarre life brought about by his unhappy childhood, there was actually more to it than what was made available to interested followers.

Behind the great music and inspiration to a lot of entertainers as well as ordinary people, Jackson lived a life of travesty that was only unraveled days after he died. I, myself, am amazed with news accounts detailing his physical state following an autopsy performed on him.

A lot of people thought he was in good shape, although his physical appearance was already a far cry from his Beat It and Thriller days. Yes, he may have literally turned from black to white when it comes to his skin complexion. He grew his hair long. He had his jaw, face and chin done.

But after he succumbed to cardiac arrest on a Thursday last week, it was a horror to discover that the icon was more than the plastic surgery that he was subjected to.

The icon was said to be "virtually bald" and was already wearing a wig as his hair had been "reduced to peach fuzz on his scalp." The phenomenal entertainer, whose Thriller album still remains the best selling album of all time, was unbelievably only 112 pounds at the time the autopsy was performed. His stomach, the leaked autopsy report further revealed was "completely empty" save for the partially dissolved pills. It further added that the star was skin and bones and had been "eating nothing but pills."

The deterioration of his health had been attributed to the child molestation charges hurled against him several years back and that he was never the same as he could hardly sleep and eat. Not to mention the fact that he was also reported to have been addicted to painkillers following his accident while shooting an ad that burned his scalp.

Michael Jackson was indeed a study in contrast. In the entertainment world, he received adulation from all over as he mesmerized people with his dance moves and wowed audience with his singing prowess. Deep inside though, he was a time bomb that had tragically exploded.

One grief expert noted that with the fame and wealth that Jackson achieved in life, he really had no one and that there was "much to learn from the life of the sad little boy who never wanted to grow up and was forever held captive by the sadness of his childhood."

Not since the death Princess Diana of England had I taken such interest in lives of famous persons. They may have everything -- fame, wealth and influence -- but they continue to put up a front for people hoping for love and belongingness.

And in all these, they have to live a farce life for a lot of people who look up to them.

At the end of the day, I thank God for just being my unknown self, away from all the pressures that celebrated individuals are subjected to, nothing to keep up with. And most of all, I have always had the support of the members of my family -- people who matter most to me.
