City set to release P60M calamity funds

DAVAO CITY Administrator Wendel Avisado said P60 million is ready to be released by the City Government after the city declared at least two barangays affected by Monday's flashfloods under state of calamity.

In Wednesday's special session of City Council, the august body approved the release of the P60 million calamity fund to barangays Los Amigos in Tugbok district and Talomo proper.

Of the funds, Avisado said "P30 million will be used to rehabilitate damaged infrastructures, P20 million for financial and relief assistance to affected families, P1 million for livestock, and P9 million for agriculture and fishery sector."

He said the budget for infrastructure would be administrated by City Engineer's Office, relief assistance would be under the City Social Services Development Office (CCSSDO), livestock under the City Veterinarian's Office, and agriculture and fisheries under the City Agriculturist Office.

"The CSSDO will provide food and clothing, and other commodity assistance to affected families," he said.

City Engineer Jose D. Gestuveo said the infrastructure budget also covers the reconstruction of the Tugbok Quarry Bailey Bridge.

"The bridge is lost. It was totally washed out by the flood," said Gusteveo.

The budget for infrastructure would also be spent for the clearing of roads damage by the flood.

"Heavy equipment will be used to remove the thick mud and debris blocking the roads," said Gusteveo.

Gustaveo said there will be no assistance to be extended for the repair of damaged houses.

"The CSSDO will give support on food and clothing, but as for the shelter, we do not cover it. I don't know what are the plans of the government on that," said Gustaveo in the vernacular.

Acting city agriculturist Rocelio Tabay said they will provide seedlings, rice shoots, fertilizers, catfish fingerlings to affected farmers and fishermen.

Tabay estimated the rice farms will be ready for planting in two or three weeks from now.
