Dano emerges champ in Digos chessfest

COR Jesu College of Digos coach Jimmy Dano tallied 4.5 points to capture the Open title of the 10th Araw ng Digos City Chess Championships 2010 in Digos City.

The top seeded Dano outclassed fourth-seed and former University of Mindanao (UM) Digos varsity player Neil Abayon in the final fifth round.

Hometown bet Reynaldo Conte bested three other four-pointers vie tiebreaks to grab the second spot. Fellow Digos players Ashley Casil, Abayon and Reynaldo Gempero wounded up in the third, fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Completing the top 12 were three-pointers Lloyd Limon, Bernard Castro, Mark Agravante, Jaynard Cansing, Julius Lovitos, Veljun Cuizon and Ian Dalipe.

The kiddies crown went to Raymond Vistal who also hails from Digos. He earned 4.5 points, while runner-up Rhitchel Fritz Lopez garnered three points and third-placer Shawnee Delica made two points.

Digos City's Vic Birondo, meanwhile, edged Cheryl Dano with superior tiebreaks to pocket the class B title. Both chessers finished with 4.5 points in the five-round Swiss System format tournament sponsored by Digos City Mayor Jojo Penas and organized by Digos City Chess Club president Lito Laput.

Dano took the runner-up honors, while solo three-pointer Daniel ASor placed third, followed by 3.5 scorers Eddie Manino Boyet Corbeta, Raymond Rosal, Crista Gallego and Eric Codino who occupied the next five spots.

Engr. Nofre Reyes was chief arbiter, while Alfred Moulic assisted him in the two-day event organized for Digos City woodpushers only. (MLSA)
