Davao bets corner table tennis titles

DAVAO City standouts Zoren Patrick Mendiola and Jacqueline Caragao reaped top honors at the close of the Mayor Sara and Vice Mayor Duterte Kadayawan Table Tennis Tournament at the NCCC Mall activity center over the weekend.

Mendiola, a varsity player at the University of Sto. Tomas, beat Michael Paña, 3-1, in their men's singles championship match. Paña took the runner-up honors instead while Christian Vicente placed third.

Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) player Jacqueline Caragao bested Evelyn Nemeño, 3-1, to pocket the women's singles title of the meet organized by the Metro Davao Table Tennis Association (Medatta) and presented by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO).

In the men's team event, Medatta 2 hacked out a 3-2 win over Medatta 1 for the crown.

Medatta 2 was bannered by Richard Gonzales, Antonio Aguinalde and Bonnie Ong while runner-up Medatta 1 was composed of Teng Ledesma, Arnie Uy, Jose Ortalla, Jr. and Medatta president Dr. Louie Metran Metran.

UST's Mendiola, Henberd Ortalla and Julius Espozo placed third along with Spin Davao's Michael Dalumpines, Lauro Crisostomo, Gil Ablanque and Dennis Garcia.

Alexander Rodriguez, meanwhile, subdued Abner Osorio, 3-1, to rule the boys 14-under division. Osorio and Celso Cubio took the next two spots instead.

Melody Intong blanked Angellie Madulin, 3-0, to bag the girls 14-under crown. The latter finished second while Razel Quibol placed third.

The men's class B Invitational title went to Handel Yap who prevailed over Eduardo Tuquib and Peter Serondo who placed second and third, respectively.

Individual winners received cash prizes and medals while team winners went home with trophies and cash prizes.
