MATI, Davao Oriental--Davao City woodpushers swept their first round matches to open their title-defense in the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet 2010 chess competition on a high note at the Mati National Comprehensive High School here Thursday.
Vietnam Asean Youth Chess Championships gold medalist Austin Jacob Literatus and Robert Mendez demolished their secondary boys opponents Jimzon Trianga of Compostela Valley and Azer Castillon of Davao Oriental, respectively.

In secondary girls, Rowelyn Joy Acedo outclassed Jeiel Keilah Tabamo of Davao del Norte while Nikki Erica Yngayo defeated Darlyn Mae Rosatace.
Davao City's elementary teams also struck hard following victories by Hannah Joyce Amoncio over Sheena Rizza Abiera ofDavao del NOrte and Ella Grace Moulic against Janine Chanelle Fune of Davao Oriental while Jet Engay disposed off Nemrod Mondes of Island Garden City of Samal and Bhing Joel Gimony overcame Jayson Jay Gurang of ComVal in the boys side.
Tournament manager Lydia Ampo said Davao City teams here are very strong.
Only the top two players in each event will advance to the Palarong Pambansa set on April 11 to 17 in Tarlac.
