PINOYS are definitely music lovers.

The advent of the local music industry brought pop, love songs, rock and all the other music genres to choose from.

Last Saturday, I was given a chance to cover Sponge Cola at the Abreeza Mall, one of the best rock bands here in the country.

Back when I was still in college, I have listened to their music and I must admit, getting gaga with their hit songs.

Sponge Cola is one of the artists from Metro Manila who performed at the Abreeza Mall as part of the 75th Araw ng Dabaw celebrations.

The show started at 6 p.m. that day but as early as 4 p.m., mall goers were already at the Activity Area, all eager to catch a glimpse of their favorite band performing live.

The band is composed of Yael Yuzon, lead vocals, guitar; Gosh Dilay, bass guitar, backing vocals; Armo Armovit, lead guitar; and Tmac Cruz, drums, vocals.

Sponge Cola (sometimes spelled Spongecola), was formed back in 2002, producing several hit songs like "Lunes", "KLSP", "Jeepney", "Makapiling Ka" and many others.

Indeed, the band proves everyone that they are a total performer.

The short performance that day was all worth the wait, as they serenaded Dabawenyos with their all-time favorite songs.

Yael's charm and good looks is a plus factor for band, not to mention as well the vocal quality he has.

The spectators were in awe when Yael performed his own version of I Will Always Love You, the song made popular by the late Whitney Houston. Truly, Yael's vocal range can shift from rock to mellow and then back again.

With their great influence and smash hits, the band won four awards in the 2007 MYX Music Awards, besting other OPM acts in both Favorite Artist and Favorite Group categories. Other than that, they continued to an inspiration to emerging local bands who are hoping to make its name in the industry.

Last year, the band released Araw Oras Tagpuan, their fourth studio album, which turned Diamond shortly after.

The album features the songs like "Tambay", "Regal", "Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay" and "Stargazer".

They left the crowd that day with Yael belting out "Bitiw", which was voted as both Favorite Song and Favorite Rock Video years ago.

An almost hour performance was worth waiting. And the best part was watching Yael walking above steel railings just to reach out to fans.
