Tujan: Festival of music and food-A A +A
Tuesday, August 20, 2013
SPANKING events took place all over Davao City during the Kadayawan Festival as celebrities swarmed the city to give Dabawenyos the fun they will never forget.
Wild screams and a throng armed with cameras flooded the Fountain Court of SM Lanang Premiere as the country's Prince of Pop Eric Santos took the stage and swept everyone's breath away.
The fountain court was jampacked last August 17, as Dabawenyo fans were told to be prepared to get romantic. Time does fly by so fast. It's been 10 years since Eric became the first grand winner of ABS-CBN's singing competition "Star in A Million". And now, in celebration of being in the business for a decade, Eric releases a new album entitled: "Eric Santos Collection”, a 30 track album of all the hit teleserye songs that he has done all over the years.
Musically, I have to say Eric has matured and breaking himself free from his usual balladeer image, who just doesn't sing the songs but living it.
Eric dressed in a trendy red jacket, his voice pierces the heat of the season with a cool, ethereal rendition of "Your Love", as he climbed the stage.
The promo tour became a videoke-fest and by request session as Eric graciously granted and generously obliged to his fans request.
"Ano pa ang gusto niyong kantahin ko?" he asked to the delight of the fans.
Swiveling to connect with the audience, he talked to his fans and asked someone to join him on stage for a duet of "Pusong Bato" while gamely posing for pictures as well.
Not all singers are like Eric, he sings to you like he means having to address the emotions you're feeling inside.
"The Prince of Theme Songs," as he is known sang "Sana Maulit Muli", "Say You'll Never Go," "Pagbigyan Muli," "Kulang Ako Kung Wala Ka," "You are my Song," "Now That I Have You,: "On The Wings Of Love," "In Your Eyes," "Miss You Like Crazy," "If You Asked Me To," "Rolling in The Deep," "Later," "Maging Sino Ka Man," "Muling Buksan ang Puso."
He also sang his radio favorite that perhaps every Filipino claim to love, Pink and Nate Russ "Just Give Me a Reason."
"Para sa mga lalaking torpe," he said and breaks into the song "Later" to the delight of his fans.
The crowd got wilder as he segued to what he claims his favorite song every time he takes a bath, (On the Wings of Love), and melancholic chick typical sentiment, like dreaming of true love (In Your Eyes), about achieving dreams and doing what you love most (Love Always Finds A Way), to moving on after a break-up with (Muling Buksan ang Puso).
The nearly two-hour concert spotlights pop hits, lushly arranged romantic ballads, as well as a medley of Teleserye hits that Eric made popular. I am not a fan of Eric Santos but after that night I become one, I even bought a copy of his CD, for a 30 track album for only P250 it is worth it.
Davao Gourmet Collective
I also get the chance to be invited at the opening of "The Davao Gourmet Collective" at SM Lanang Premiere, a food festival that ran from August 16 to 18, which highlighted Davao's top chef and restaurateurs to showcase exceptional eats and the tastiest specialties at the mall's atrium.
While jazz music reverberated the whole area, people came by to indulge on the various gourmet selections prepared by participating restaurant suppliers and purveyors such as Bluegre’, Cellar de Boca, Bangkok Wok, Villa Margarita, Osvaldo’s Cakes, Malagos Farmhouse, Hog’s Breath Café, Morisco Ristorante Italiano, Beko’s Biik, JR. by Jonathan’s Cupcakery, Monica Floriendo, and Crazy Cook.
The ceremonial toast was graced by SM Lanang Premier Mall manager Mary Therese Lape¤a- Manalo, and Department of Tourism in Davao Region director Art Boncato and was hosted by Zee Lifestyle Davao editor Marissa Tionko.
The event was as tasty as it sounds and I wish there is another round of the Food Festival anytime soon. My friends and I honestly pig out on some of the food displays, and took some home over the weekend.
The Bagnet Burrito at Barrio Burito is a must try, the Red Velvet & Pecan Cupcake was my instant favorite, for those adventurous palates you can also try the Spicy Dilis Cream Cheese Frosting , the steamed Asian buns, with bomb fillings of Angus Beef and horseradish cream was also a favorite.
My friend bought the tasty Davao tablea oatmeal cookies and it was delicious. Beko’s Biik never fails to give us the crunch and taste we crave. I have to admit I didn't try all the food displays I guess I am not as adventurous as my friends. But overall, the Gourmet Collective was an ensemble of very good food at a very reasonable price.
Never mind, it was worth it.
"The Davao Gourmet Collective" is indeed a unique food festival where Dabawenyos have the opportunity to discover new, interesting eats from well-known local establishments and new food entrepreneurs, alike.
