IT'S a rare opportunity to cover concerts that features international stars.
That is why, when I was asked if I'm interested to watch the Patti Austin and Joe Pizzulo concert in the city, I immediately grabbed the chance.
Aside from the work-related factor, which I have to write the event, it's a plus that I love them, and I love listening to their songs.
Big thanks to our GM for the chance.
I'm not that old though, but I'm proud to say I grew up in years when quality music was filling the air.
The concert was held at SMX Convention Center, SM Lanang Premier, last September 9.
First to grace the stage was Joe, one of the lead singers of Sergio Mendes during 1980s.
It's his first time here in Davao City, but Joe said he was very overwhelmed with the warm welcome he received from the Dabawenyo audience.
The soothing voice of this guy never ceases, in lay man's term "walang kupas."
He serenaded the spectators with some of its hits like What do We Mean To Each Other, which he had a duet with Star Power finalist Krissel Valdez, Somewhere In Time, Never Gonna Let You Go and a lot more.
Right after the performance of Joe, a short break followed.
Then, the stage opened with a lively beat, as the band headed by the musical director, Lorrie Ilustre, welcomed Patti, as she performed the song Do you Love Me.
It's a 1981 dance/soul single included in her album Every Home Should Have One.
Wearing an all white with silver decorations, the 63-year old singer was grooving all the way to the audience delight.
It's very evident that Patti is well loved by everybody, and her songs really inspire each of those who watched the show.
The American R&B, Pop and Jazz music singer also shared her recent performance with Miss Saigon Lea Salonga on The Voice of the Philippines.
"I am still emotional with the performance I had with my sister Lea. I love her and she sings like an angel. Even my road manager was crying when he watched the clip on YouTube," the singer said.
Patti didn't miss as well to appreciate and extend her thanks to all her Filipino fans on the undying support extended to her.
"The audience in this country is so loyal and sincere. If you show me all the love I give all the love," she said.
Some of the hit songs Patti belted out on stage were Stop. Look. Listen, Smoke Gets In your Eyes, Through the Test of Time, Baby Come To Me, and many more.
Her rendition of the song Lean on Me also moves me, for it was very powerful and emotional.
"The message is so simple. It tells how we live and survive. We can survive through unity, that we rise like a Phoenix no matter what," Patti told her audience.
The two-hour performance of Patti and Joe was great.
Their powerful voice and rare gift of singing with any music genre still lives, with class and conviction.
A SPECIAL bond was created since the series of GMA-7 Anna Karenina started airing on GMA's primetime block: the boob-tube.
The series was created by RJ Nuevas, which started airing last June 3 on GMA Telebabad block replacing Indio.
The story was based on the 1996 original television series with the same title under the production of Viva Television which featured Antoinette Taus, Sunshine Dizon, Kim delos Santos and Tanya Garcia as lead stars.
The lead stars of the remake this year are composed of Krystal Reyes, Barbie Forteza and Joyce Ching.
"Masaya sa set, kasi nabuo namin yung samahan na talagang close kami. So kahit na stress na, parang wala lang. Nagtutulungan din kasi kami," said Joyce who is the eldest among them, She is now 18-years-old.
The lead stars of the series were in Davao City weeks ago to celebrate and provide entertainment to their Dabawenyo fans, in line with the 28th Kadayawan Festival.
In a short chitchat with the three beautiful ladies, they also shared their dream roles.
"Siguro yung kontrabida naman, gusto ko siyang i-try," the mestisa-looking Barbie said.
"Sa akin naman is yung palaban na role, pero di naman kontrabida. Yung bida na lumalaban, tingin ko exciting siya," Krystal added.
While Joyce added: "Sa akin naman siguro yung romance-comedy na show. Yung light lang na pattern sa mga eksena di masyadong heavy gaya ng ginagawa ko."
Forever with Barbie
On the other hand, few members of Davao press also had a chance to interview Derrick Monasterio, the love interest of Barbie in the series.
According to the actor, if he has to choose, he wants to be with Barbie forever.
"Sana forever na kaming magkasama ni Barbie as loveteam. Kasi pag iba naman ibang adjustment na naman yun. Nagkakasundo kasi kami sa halos lahat ng bagay."
You can't deny the strong chemistry and kilig factor the young couple has.
Derrick is with the industry for three years now, which he really makes sure he shows good influence to all his fans.
"Bilang artista, di lang naman hanggang sa pag-arte ang dapat mong gawin, dapat mapakita mo rin yung mabubuting asal to the viewers, sa fans na sumusuporta sayo."
The young actor was given a good break on his showbiz career when he was given a role in the film Tween Academy: Class of 2012.
The Kapuso tween stars participated at Kapuso Barangayan held at Juliville Subdivision Covered Court, Barangay Tigatto last August 17. It was followed by a Kapuso Mall Show at the Atrium of Gaisano Mall.
