Mendoza: Why Singing Bee stings me-A A +A
Friday, December 13, 2013
IN 2008, when the Philippine version of The Singing Bee started to hit the Philippine television via the Kapamilya Network, I really got curious about how this type of program would capture its own market.
Yes, the show’s format is some sort of a videoke challenge but the difference is that the quality of the contestant’s singing voice is never a consideration for winning, unlike the defunct videoke challenge show Sing-galing of the Kapatid Network years back.
In Sing-galing, the contestant really had to possess good singing voice in order to continuously hold the defending champion tag. Meanwhile, in Singing Bee, once you know the lyrics of the song and you pronounced the missing lyrics right, you’re definitely a winner.
This Kapamilya singing game show had its first five seasons from April 21, 2008 until February 6, 2010 with actor Cesar Montano as host. During Season 1, the show used to air on weekdays while during Seasons 2 to 5, it aired every Saturday and Sunday.
As for this year’s season, it is being aired every Saturday, right after It’s Showtime, with returning Kapamilya stars Roderick Paulate and Amy Perez as hosts. Season 6 had its pilot episode last November 16.
For almost a month of airing now, I was only able to watch two episodes of the Kapamilya show Singing Bee, which had Bugoy Drilon and Sheryl Cruz as the defending champions.
Since a teaser announcing the comeback of this karaoke singing and spelling bee-style competition was shown in September, I really got excited about it. Why?
First of all, because I know that non-singers like me will once again have a source of entertainment which may give us the chance to win a million peso in a videoke challenge even if we don’t have a golden voice (but a garden voice, instead?).
Second, I like watching the back-up dancers called The Honeybees. Yes, I must admit, they are annoying at some point but their curves have been motivating me to get back in shape immediately even if I just gave birth two months ago.
Third, The Bandble Bee headed by Mel Villena and The Songbees bring some level of fun to my ears. They just sound so lively!
Finally, I love the way Dick and Amy handle the show. Their camaraderie really registers on screen. It’s been awhile since I got to see these two together on TV.
