Urbandub rocks

-A A +A

WHILE many are enjoying a romantic date at a posh restaurant a night before Valentine's Day, some 1,500 Dabawenyos opted to watch the almost an hour rockin' mini-concert of Urbandub at SM Lanang Premier's The Fountain Court (TFC).

The Filipino rock band performed before their Dabawenyo fans to promote their latest album called Esoteric, but they also played tracks from their previous albums, Embrace and Southern Lights.

The band has gained popularity through their notable hits laden with heavy, raw emotions such as “A New Tattoo,” “First of Summer,” “Guillotine,” “Soul Searching” and “The Fight is Over,” among many others. The band won numerous NU 107 Rock Awards, and in 2008 bagged the “Best Group” at the Junk Magazine Regional Music Awards in Malaysia. Its recent tour of Singapore has allowed them to garner more fans throughout Southeast Asia.

An indie rock act from Cebu City, Urbandub consists of Gabby Alipe (vocals, guitar), John Dinopol (guitar, vocals), Lalay Lim (bass, vocals) and Janjan Mendoza (drummer). However, in the said gig in Davao, my boys’ favourite bassist, Lalay, wasn’t around because she’s still on maternity leave. Yes, Lalay just gave birth to her first-born with husband Dr. Laurence Geronimo.

The first time I watched this band in Davao, it was really Lalay who caught my attention. I got amazed with how superb she plays the bass guitar. From someone who has no talent in music, especially in playing a musical instrument, Lalay is definitely an idol!

With the band bannering their 6th album (which was actually released in September last year), I’m pretty sure that my three boys will start playing their guitars and keyboard to Urbandub’s music again, and their tracks will be our companion once more during our travels.

The Cebuano group’s latest album features 10 tracks, to wit: 1. Stars Have Aligned; 2. Hover; 3. Never Will I Forget; 4. Dim the Headlights; 5. Cold Hearted; 6. When Love is Not an Answer; 7. Sleight of Hand; 8. Between the Earth and Sky; 9. Mantra; and, 10. The Burning Taste.

Meet and Greet

Before the show, a Meet and Greet activity with the band happened at 5 p.m. inside JB Music Store of SM Lanang Premier.

Fans lined up to have their copy of the album signed, and pose for a photo with their idols.

Let me thank Ms. Acey Puno for the photos and the constant invites.
