Wednesday, August 20, 2014
WITH everything that already happened, it was crazy to think there would be another day packed with great music and great vibes as Tunog Mindanaw 2014 roared the SM City Davao Annex Event Center where eager Dabawenyos flocked.
This year's Tunog Mindanaw was bigger than ever, I have attended and covered the competition for the last two years and as each competition goes by, it becomes much more than a "good time" and that was quite evident this year as music entries significantly becomes festive, bolder, and authentic.
Tunog Mindanaw (World Music Festival) is a music competition that contemporizes the Mindanao music tradition integrating it with other music traditions without losing the original Mindanaoan sounds and is one of the major events of the 29th Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival.
There were 20 entries submitted, but 10 made it in the finals. The music was amazing! Honestly, I feel every act I saw was so good.
Anyway, here's how it went down. The show started at 7:00 pm with the angelic voices of Ecofellas leading the singing of the Philippine National Anthem as well as the invocation. The beautiful Co-Chairperson of Tunog Mindanaw, Councilor Ms. April Marie Dayap gave a good welcome speech that unites and sets the tone for the event, lauding the creativity and musical talents of Mindanao musicians.
The criteria for judging were as follows; Musicality 45%, Creativity 25%, and Commercial Appeal 20% that totals to a hundred (100) percent. Prizes at stake are as follows; Grand Winner (P50, 000), 1st-runner up (P30, 000), 2nd Prize winner (P20, 000) and consolation prizes at P10, 000 pesos each.
Some entries were "Anina Na" (a song about hope towards freedom), Kulturang Pilipino, (highlights the beautiful sites and festivities of Mindanao), Sayawit sa Kinaiyahan (Thanksgiving song for abundance and gifts of nature), Pagsubang (a song about making progress amidst the inviolable circumstances of life and reality), Dabawenyo, promoting to the world that life is here in Davao), Pinagpalang Mindanaw and Hudyaka among others.
The judges had a hard time selecting the winners but however voted unanimously for Davao City National High School's Kulturang Pilipino to grab this year's Tunog Mindanaw Grand Title. The judges were MOR 101.1 DJ Harvey John Bahaynon a.k.a. Mario Penduko, Conductor Par excellence, Mr. Alvin E. Aviola, Mindanao's pride Ms. Baying Barrios, 2014 Festival Director of Kadayawan sa Davao Mr. Edmundo R. Acaylar, Acting Dean of the College of Music at the University of Immaculate Concepcion, Mr. Eric A. Moreno.
SM City Davao's Mall Manager Ms. Lynette Lopez together with City Administrator Atty. Melchor Quitain and the Chairman of Kadayawan sa Davao Foundation Inc., Atty. Rollie Dumalag awarded the winners, and gamely posed for pictures as wild cheers and applause echoed the event center.
My favorite Mindanao artist and last year's Tunog Mindanaw winner Ms. Maan Chua, was beaming with pride while receiving her 2nd place award. It is indeed a momentous event for Mindanao talent, Tunog Mindanaw exemplifies that Mindanao has a whole lot of talented musicians that the world should take notice of.
Well festi-friends, thanks for taking the time to read this. I'll catch you at the next festival; hopefully it's not too far down the road. Peace and joy to all.
