Entrepreneurship for the unemployed

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the creation of a management committee of “Mag-Negosyo Ta Day!,” in support of unemployed women in Davao City, said council secretary Zuleika Lopez Friday.

"The mayor leans toward women and children. Our city is even the first to have a Women's Code nationwide. Women are usually marginalized in the labor sector, making them vulnerable. This is one way for women to do something for themselves," said Lopez, who is vice chair of the committee.

Lopez said Mag-Negosyo ta Day! is a social entrepreneurship project. The committee would use entrepreneurship principles to guide women organizations in organizing, creating, and managing a venture and creating social chance.

"We will provide these women organizations with financial support so they can find ways to earn. We would educate them and promote their products and after they have regained the cost ibabalik nila yan. Then we will give the amount to another (organization) hanggang manganak ng manganak, parami ng parami," Lopez said.

Lopez said the project took root in the financial support for social entrepreneurship given by the Department of Labor and Employment. After a series of discussions with the Integrated Gender and Development Division, they chose three women organizations.

"We saw that they already have the skills, the manpower, and they need just a little push from our side. We would support them and give them venue for their products. We want this to become a success story," she added.

Kababayen-an Alang sa Teknolohiya Nga Haum sa Kinaiyahan ug Kauswagan (Katakus) Inc., GSIS Mothers Club, and Ray of Hope, which create handicrafts of lampshades made from durian fiber, crochet clothing, and bags made of straw, will receive financial support from the committee.

Lopez said the products will be displayed and sold at the Mag-Negosyo ta Day! booth to be put up in People's Park at NCCC Mall next week, official Davao City website, and officially launched during the Kadayawan.
