The defense-A A +A

IT'S like a roller coaster ride. This is how I described my career as reporter/journalist of Sun.Star Davao Publishing Inc. for about three years now. Well, aside from beating deadlines, it's the entire field experience that made me feel like I'm in such a ride.
Indeed, as I noticed that journalists are frequently placed in emotional situation especially those covering the defense beat, although every situation entails various emotions and reactions.
For instance, covering crimes, conflicts, natural disasters, and peace and order matter. I have seen families and friends grieving over lost loved ones and abducted love ones.
I have also seen people in triumph, pleased, and celebrating for particular occasions and reasons. I become fully aware of risk, violence, fear, betrayal, guilt, remorse, anger, harassment, trauma, thrill, determination, and satisfaction. All of these are in my work.
One among exciting experiences I have is when I went with other media colleagues to cover the founding anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines in December 2010. I was a newbie reporter that time. So, it was the first time I met a real communist rebel whom I only read in the papers.
I was also able to meet the men and women of the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines and covered their press conferences and other events like the Joint Peace Security Community Center workshop.
I have covered and heard various protests from people like farmers, youths, women and the less fortunate; the release of those prisoners of war; flashfloods in some areas of Davao Region, and other man-made and natural calamities.
I was also able to experience riding a mobile patrol responding the call of a citizen and saw dead people sometime in 2011; police saving the victims of illegal recruitment; and police arresting those smoking violators and suspected drug pushers.
For three years that I have been part of the media, I have learned that being a journalist entails passion, dedication and sincerity to do the craft not for one's interest, but for the people to be heard, informed, assessed, educated, and motivated.
