Chinese painting in a giant exhibit-A A +A

A TOTAL of 264 Chinese fans painted by 34 artists will be on exhibit starting September 14 at the atrium of SM Lanang to mark the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival.
These will also be a free Chinese painting workshop on the opening day.
Two of 264 fans are giant fans measuring four feet by eight feet, exhibit organizer Alex Chan Lim said.
The exhibit will feature works by 13 members of the Chan Lim family, 20 of their students, and a guest artist, Sun.Star Davao editor-in-chief Stella A. Estremera.
“All have daytime job from various professions or students,” Chan Lim said. The two giant fans are a collaborative work by their students. One fan has a landscape theme while the second one has a flower theme.
“This is the biggest ever exhibit we have yet set up,” Chan Lim said. Before the SM Lanang exhibit, the biggest they have staged was the one for the Chinese New Year in SM Mall of Asia.
“It seems that every exhibit we try to raise the bar in terms of quality of artworks, number of participants and concept,” he said.
The Chan Lim Family of Artists is the only group teaching and propagating Chinese painting in the country, despite the relatively big population of Filipino-Chinese.
Chan Lim and his brothers learned from Taiwanese masters since they were just kids, as prodded by their father, Jose, who is into Western style painting but who also dabbles in Chinese painting.
“Chinese Painting has evolved from the traditional ink with detailed strokes to something colorful and bolder approach. This is the result of blending western techniques into Chinese painting,” he said.
The exhibit here is in partnership with SM Lanang, the Davao Dynamic Youth, Davao Filipino Chinese Cultural Foundation Inc., and Park Inn by Radisson.
Formal opening will be at 2 p.m. of September 14. This will be followed by a free Chinese painting workshop from 3 to 6 p.m. right at the venue.
Those interested can call telephone number 226-3171 and 221-6004.
This is the second time the Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students are holding an exhibit here. They started small last year, also at the SM Lanang, just after the mall’s formal opening.
