Two minds, one big event-A A +A

IN THE midst of their deep slumber, most often they are awakened by a single idea that pops out of their heads, and that idea has left them with no choice but to get out of bed, grab at least anything which can be of use to capture it, or else they'll just let it slip away with the dreams.
Such disruption of a good night sleep has been part of their trade a few decades now for Annie Paz Lim and Engr. Dennis "Dave" B. Domingo.
Annie and Dave are among the few event organizers and light directors who are behind the fabulous birthday parties, concerts, corporate events and weddings both inside and outside of Davao.
"Ang thinking namin ng mga artists start 2 or 3 in the morning, 8 in the morning sabog kami nyan," Domingo said.
In many events, it's the two who worked hand-in-hand in coming up with a glitzy event for celebrators.
Annie, as a decorator, has her expertise on transforming an entire barren place into beautifully and artistically designed venue.
On the other hand, Dave, a lights director and chair and chief operating officer (COO) of Showimage Inc., gets his hands on the overall light and sound effects, simply giving life to the entire event.
"Light is life because without light you are in darkness," he jested.
"We provide professional lights and sounds, video system, LED walls, power generators for rentals," he said.
Annie said one good thing they look forward to in their job is meeting different personalities of varying attitudes and wants and being able to meet their expectations, even if the their job is nothing short of a mind-numbing task at times.
But, they too run out of concepts sometimes, given the so many years that they've been doing the same thing time and time again. Such deadlock, although typical of their jobs, should never get in their way.
In times like this, they duck out from the scene, set off trips, and then learn new things.
"We research, ina-aral ang mga ginagawa namin, we love to travel so that we get to see nice things saan-saan, we love to source out materials wherever. Then, come up with a design. Create and update," Annie said.
"Learning will never stop, it will only stop when you die," Dave added.
People like them get to meet many personalities, meticulous clients included, but no matter how picky they can get, Annie said it will always boil down to the budget, in what she describes "the bottomline" of every event.
But, what makes her work stand out from others is personalizing the overall design of the events according to how clients want it to happen.
"That's why, I don't have packages sa decors because depende kung ano ang gusto nila mangyari. Some want it simple and elegant, some gusto extravagant, some gusto nila elegant but within their budget," she said.
"It (event) depends on what they want to happen, first we do some ocular, I come up with a plan, before that plan, series of nights and days of not sleeping. Syempre naghahanap tayo kung ano ang design. From there, I source out materials na," Annie added.
Her team is usually made up of 10 to 20 people working on an event. All the thinking and conceptualization are coming from her end as to how should the event will be.
For his part, Dave said "in order to be a good leader, he should be a good follower, and good leader uses other hands."
