Pilates Plus opens in Davao-A A +A

PILATES Plus, the newest Pilates (pronounced as pi-lah-tees) studio in Davao City that opened last December 2013, has now created a growing trend among the health aficionados who wish to have more than just a buff body.
The growing trend for the resistance exercise Stott Pilates is propelled by the fact that it does not drain all the energy out of the body unlike doing an intensive workout after hitting a gym, which sets a clearer margin how it differs from other rigorous forms of exercises.
This exercise is not really for those dreaming to have a body stripped of fat, as this fitness program helps just about anyone improve breathing, develop core muscle, strengthen muscles in the arms, abdomen, back hips, and legs done through a series of slow movements.
Maria Carmela Theresa Briones, a physiotherapist and certified Stott Pilates instructor at Pilates Plus, said the fitness program emphasizes on how to isolate a specific muscle, especially the inner core.
"Another goal is to bring back the natural curve of our spine and align the body and enhance the confidence. When you achieve the goal, there will be a balance, you feel revitalized and feel relaxed, and you can move easily," she said.
Even those with injuries can perform Stott Pilates, although there's a specific modified form designed to fit people depending upon their health conditions.
Before the program starts, there will be a certified Pilates instructor to assess, based on the postural analysis, what specific programs they need to undergo.
"Some of the people want Pilates part of their routine," she said.
She said Stott Pilates was developed by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates in 1920. A little more glimpse on its history: Joseph was jailed during World War 1, but continued performing the exercise, improved it, and taught inmates to perform it, too. To cut the story short, some more modifications were taken in to allow people with medical conditions, and even those in beds, to work out as well. Since then, the Pilates gained great following across the globe.
"Stott Pilates is a mind and body exercise that promotes the principles of late Pilates by incorporating a modern knowledge about the body," Briones said.
More than just attaining stability, Pilates is comprised of dynamic movement that after achieving each movement, should allow one to pull off a specific movement without having to move other muscles.
"Losing weight is just secondary," she said.
Pilates is widely recognized in the medical and sports industry because of its refined movements that are safe and effective for injury recovery and rehabilitation, especially for hamstring and groin injuries.
Based on her experience as a Pilates instructor, she held sessions for clients as young as 12 years old and as old as 94, just so they can have a leaner muscle and more strengthened core.
Pilates Plus, located at Plaza del Carmen, Loyola St., Bo. Obrero, Davao City, has equipment for clients, especially those with body conditions.
