ONE of the highlights of the annual Araw ng Davao celebration is the conferment of the prestigious Datu Bago award.

The award is in memory of Datu Bago, one of the bravest Davao chieftains who fought against Spanish colonizers.

This year's awardees are the late Mayor Elias B. Lopez (posthumous) and Dr. Perfecto A. Alibin.

The late Mayor Elias B. Lopez is especially recognized for his legacy of institutionalizing the Datu Bago Awards, an annual tradition of the city in giving due recognition to outstanding Dabawenyos who lived to serve the city and people of Davao through their various contributions, thereby helping in the growth and development of the City.

Furthermore, the late Elias Lopez also institutionalized the Davao City Hymn “Tayo ay Dabawenyo”, and the annual celebration of the "Araw ng Dabaw."

He was also responsible for unifying the different tribes (indigenous people or the Lumads) and giving them due importance by creating the festival of festivals, the “Kadayawan” (the precursor of “Apo Duwaling”), showcasing the rich and colorful culture of the various tribes of Davao.
The late Lopez is the pride of the Bagobo tribe, having attained the highest honor of being City Mayor, Vice Mayor, Councilor and Congressman, whose public life was marked with outstanding public service.

Dr. Perfecto A. Alibin is the incumbent President of the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) whose contribution to the field of education has placed Davao City in the map of the academic world. From a simple teacher, he rose from the ranks, from becoming a dean, director, researcher, consultant, vice president, to president.

He has raised the standard of education at Usep, and for that he has received various awards here and abroad.

The Datu Bago Awards Organization through its chair, Dr. Guillermo P. Torres Jr., with the concurrence of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, said that The Datu Bago Awards Night and Mayor’s Appreciation Night will be held on March 15, 2014 at the Royal Mandaya Hotel Ballroom.
