Floodwaters displaced thousands

THOUSANDS of families have fled from their homes in Central Mindanao due to heavy flooding.

Based on reports gathered from the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) and Soccskargen, mass evacuation have been launched in 10 barangays in Sultan Kudarat and Sultan Mastura, Maguindanao after waters from Rio Grande de Mindanao overflowed due to the heavy rains.

Army Chief Major General Anthony Alcantara has ordered 603rd Brigade Commander Colonel Ernesto Aradanas to lead the rescue operations of residents trapped by floodwaters.

The rescue group also includes members from the police, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Coast Guard and National Disaster Coordinating Council.

Meanwhile, Sultan Kudarat Mayor-elect Datu Tucao Mastura blamed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the administration of President Gloria M. Arroyo for the sluggish dredging operations of Rio Grande de Mindanao and re-channeling of Simuay River.

The flooding has affected the provinces of Maguindanao, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato City.

Small and medium-sized vehicles are unable to pass through the road connecting Cotabato City and Maguindanao.

Based on NDCC records, a total of 20,000 residents are now housed in evacuation centers.

Residents have sought assistance from the government and a speedy solution to the constant flooding. (Edgardo Fuerzas)
