CEBU -- San Miguel Brewery Inc. capped this year's staging of the beer festival with a big bash at The Ballfield of Mactan Export Processing Zone in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu on November 4.
It was highlighted by the much-awaited 12th installment of SMB's National Beer Drinking Contest that converged beer drinkers all over the country.
The event also featured the country's top bands -- the Brownman Revival, Rocksteddy and dance group Street Beat -- providing chilly and danceable music that delighted thousands of beer drinkers who flocked to the venue.
Six teams from various beer regions across the country faced off during the competition, besting each to grab the title as this year's fastest beer-drinking team.
Each team was composed of five members -- all brought to Cebu by SMB for the competition.
More than P2 million worth of cash prizes and SMB promotional items were set aside for this most prestigious beer drinking contest in the country.
The Negrenses dominated the contest, beating last year's record of 53.73 seconds posted by a team from GMA North West, with a record of 45.06 seconds.
Team Sweet Mama Boom, all residents of Barangay Tanza, E.B. Magalona town in Negros Occidental, represented Visayas in the national finals.
Team members John Molina, Jic Catanghal, Raffy Briones, Lloyd Sobrepeña and Kenneth Morales beat five other groups from GMA North, GMA South, Central and Northern Luzon, South Luzon and Mindanao.
They won the coveted P500,000 cash prize and the bragging rights of being the fastest and meanest San Miguel Beer drinkers in the country.
They were awarded by national sales manager Debbie Namalata, chief finance officer Mercy Marie Jacqueline Amador and Visayas area sales manager Oscar Canave.
The Choke Boys of GMA North clocked 47.30 seconds and finished second with P200,000 cash prize while South Luzon Area's Samahang Magbabarkada won the last slot at 47.44 seconds and brought home P100,000.
All winning teams finished the relay with no penalty, meaning the drinkers made records without spillages, leftovers and unnecessary movements.
The annual beer-drinking competition engages at least 300,000 beer drinkers nationwide.
This year, the contest kicked off in May with media editions held in Metro Manila, Cebu, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro and Davao. And for the first time, relay records of all area winners of the media edition were compared, with Cebu's Freeman emerging as champions with 1 minute and 30 seconds.
