Agnes Locsin premieres latest opus in Davao

IN THIS day and age, typhoons of great magnitude and corresponding damage are no longer an unusual occurrence. Issues such as illegal logging and deforestation have been around long before the rise of commercial land development came to the regions.
In response to this, protests in the interest of the protection of trees have also risen to the surface. One that is most noteworthy is Davao's very own Agnes Locsin’s dirge for trees. Her creation, Alay sa Puno, is a tribute to the trees as it showcases the different stages of growth as well as the connection of nature to humanity.

The second of a series, DAHON: Ikalawang Galaw (following UGAT: Unang Galaw) is an hour long solo piece to be danced by none other than Georgette Sanchez. Sanchez is a seasoned performer, acclaimed both on the local and international dance scene.
This native of Bacolod was a member of Ballet Philippines, working her way up to numerous lead roles during her stay there. This was also where she crossed paths with renowned choreographer, Locsin, who became one of her mentors and biggest influences. She then went on to dance in Austria (under ABC Dance Company) and Germany (under Tanz Darmstadt).
DAHON takes inspiration from the leaves of the common trees around us and how the four elements of nature (earth, wind, fire and water) affect their existence. As a tribute to trees and a plea for reforestation, this solo concert explores the literal, physical, and symbolic virtues of the foliage that surround and purify the air for our survival. The leaves that will be featured through movement are from the kulo, talisay, bayabas, ipil-ipil, kamansi, and neem trees -- they are actually not as common as they used to be as trees slowly disappear.
DAHON will attempt to remind us of the beauty of trees as well as explore the parallelisms between their lives and ours. All this towards a dream of trees and humans existing peacefully and harmoniously together, as nature intended it to be.
DAHON: Ikalawang Galaw is to be performed at the Locsin Dance Workshop Studio Theater in Davao City on February 10, 11, and 12 at 6pm and is set to tour the country in June 2012.
