Moda Mindanaw 2012 to showcase Tinalak
-A A +ASaturday, August 4, 2012
TINALAK is a hand-woven cloth made from abaca fiber. It is considered as a cultural heritage of the Tiboli tribe in Lake Sebu. The Tiboli weaving traditionally only has 3 colors—red, black and brown. These colors are rendered from natural pigments from leaves, roots and tree barks through boiling. The patterns in the cloth are believed to have been revealed to the weavers in their dreams.
The Tinalak carries a traditional and functional significance among the indigenous group. It is considered a prized possession by a Tiboli bride and uses the cloth during childbirth as it is said to ensure safe delivery.
The weaving activity is also considered spiritual. Traditonally, cutting the cloth is believed to bring bad luck. When Tiboli women sell their works, they attach a brass ring to their produce to appease the spirits.
Complex patterns and the abaca’s sturdy quality require skilled weaving techniques and good quality tinalak often takes months to finish.
In this year’s Moda Mindanaw, SM City Davao through the initiative of Mindanao Commission on Women and in cooperation with the Department of Tourism will showcase the Tiboli heritage in an evening of fashion on August 19, at 6 p.m.at SM Davao Cinema 3.
Participating designers from different parts of the region were provided with Tinalak, which is expected to be incorporated in their entries.
