Saturday Morning Cartoon Action-A A +A
Wednesday, October 2, 2013
AS A kid, one of the greatest joys in life was waking up on Saturday mornings and plopping down on the couch to watch cartoons. The era of such programming, however, has gone, and we're mostly left to reminisce about the fond memories we have of these shows. The multiplayer online battle arena (Moba) game Awesomenauts, however, is a stark reminder of how those days used to be.
The overall presentation of Awesomenauts is what gives it that kind of cartoony vibe that we all used to love. The back story is simple; a group of mercenaries is hired to fight for a large company. That's it, actually, but with the way the game is played, it doesn’t need a deep story.
The mercenary group is called Awesomenauts (surprise, surprise) and each game is composed of 3 Awesomenauts on each side duking it out in typical Moba style -- think Dota as a side scroller.
Your characters are aided by droids who spawn at regular intervals and take a path straight to the enemy's turret, which must be destroyed to advance further into the enemy base and damage their "Solar Collector," which ends the game once destroyed.
The action in this game is fast-paced and may seem familiar to people who have played Grand Chase back in the day. Taking this in Moba style, however, your characters level up only in each match and immediately spending money to upgrade your character is crucial to getting an edge in battle and winning. Each Awesomenaut has their own unique abilities to contribute to a match and as such, have roles commonly seen in Moba's, such as "pusher" and "initiator."
One of the biggest draws of this game, however, is its style, which as previously mentioned, harkens back to the days of the peak of Saturday morning cartoons. The Awesomenauts are a quirky bunch, with members such as a seemingly French chameleon assassin and a squid as an admiral. The music, background and frenetic action only heighten the style of the game, which is probably the strongest suit of the game and is what sets it apart from other games in the market today.
Awesomenauts is $9.99 on Steam and can support up to three players playing on the same PC. If you want a break from your usual Moba pace and style, and love the era of Saturday morning cartoons, Awesomenauts is definitely for you.
