KNOWLEDGE can save lives -- this is a belief that breast cancer advocates all over the world aim to spread. With the disease affecting one out of 13 Filipinas -- the highest incidence rate in Asia -- the need to ramp up awareness in the Philippines becomes even more important.
As the world observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, the Rotary Club of Downtown Davao brings the global campaign to the local level through Pink October, an initiative that sheds light on breast cancer and its causes, diagnosis, and treatment.
The launch of Pink October, held last October 5 at the Abreeza Mall Activity Center, marks the second year in a row that the Rotary Club of Downtown Davao is promoting its awareness agenda, with Abreeza Mall also showing support as venue partner for the second time.
Pink October kicked off at 10:30 a.m. with the unveiling of the “Think Pink” installation at the Activity Center. The event also included a cooking demo, a video presentation, and free breast screening services onsite. At 1:00 p.m. came Pink October’s highlight: a forum featuring lectures by various experts in the field, as well as testimonies from breast cancer survivors.
First speaker Dr. Alex Tan, a surgical oncologist, gave a primer on breast cancer and discussed surgical treatment options for patients. Francis Edward Puno of the Fuda Cancer Hospital-Guangzhou in China then shared cutting-edge treatments that are now available. Lastly, Dr. Salvador Michael Malbog delved into breast reconstruction following a mastectomy.
An open forum gave guests a chance to voice out their concerns to the resource speakers. Later, breast cancer survivors made the afternoon’s discussions even richer with inspiring stories of triumph against the dreaded disease.
Ending the proceedings on a positive note was Pink Zumba at 5 p.m., which saw a bevy of pink-shirted ladies shimmying and swaying their way to better health and fitness.
