NOW that the Christmas season is over, you get to read and hear comments like, back to reality, back to work, back to life and all sorts of back. It seems that people go bonkers during Christmas and then when the first working day of the year comes, most if not all, drag themselves to work, sleepy heads, droopy eyes, numb legs and all. One can almost hear the collective sigh of people trooping back to work. Everything seems to be in slow motion as people are still recovering from the frenzy of the holidays. So it is back to reality, back to our mundane lives and stressed lives.

But I think we have it backwards. I think our true states are not meant for stress and pain and other negative things. Our true states, our authentic beings are meant for joy and happiness. The stress and the pain and the sorrow of our lives are not who or what we are really. Our true selves seek the happiness and the joy and the celebration of life. Our souls in its highest level are happy indeed or wish to be.

And that is why when Christmas comes, or any joyous occasion, we are at our best. There are no pretensions when we are happy. We dance, we sing, we shout, we hug and embrace, we toast, we raise our hands, we praise and we dance even more. For this is the real truth of us.

Don't you notice it? When we are happy, we are generous. When we are happy we are more compassionate and understanding. When we are happy we forget the pains and aches that people have inflicted us. It is easier for us to forgive when we are happy because when we are happy we are closer to ourselves, our true selves.

The next time you feel mad or sad or hurt, try to notice what you do or feel. You curse, you scream, you carry a load, you become arrogant, act stupid, be merciless and cruel. You are mean. And you get exhausted easily. You drain yourself or rather your negativism sucks the life out of you. When you worry you become desperate or hopeless and you scowl and sneer. And when that happens, you know, you just know that this is not you. Well unless of course you have been used to that already that you cannot distinguish your true from your false self.

During Christmas, most of us are generous and smiling. We can easily reach out to others. When we are happy, the issues that we carried seem to fall away. There are so many parties during Christmas, so many reunions, so many family gatherings and yes weddings! People who are stoic suddenly become mushy. People who are cold become soft-hearted. People who have not spoken for years suddenly embrace one another. People seek out those they love. People give to the poor even if only for the short break that is Christmas. People come home. There is magic in the air because suddenly people find their own magic in themselves and they are happy.

Still, there are others who pine for silence, who do not wish to go with the crowd. For them Christmas is a time for reflection and pause. A time to gather themselves. And yes to be true to themselves.

During Christmas, we see the best in all of us maybe because we are at our best but maybe, that should not be the word. Perhaps, we see the truth in all of us because we are true to ourselves. That in Christmas, we are closer to our true selves compared to other parts of the year. Which brings us to another Christmas wish, that sana Pasko araw araw. That Christmas ought to be every day. And if that were true, it would be a wonderful thing because we would always be true to ourselves and that the pains and despair and other things would not be the realities that we mistakenly face.

Our true selves are happy and joyful.
