I SAW photos of food posted by a friend on his Facebook account several weeks back and put that on file, my friend’s name not the food.
Thus, when I was running short of ideas what to try, I asked Igy where he ate when he posted some food photos (thank, God, he’s not the type who posts every food that lands on his table, and so it was easy to jog his memory). It’s Pippin’s, he said, in Barrio Pampanga.
He described Pippin’s as the former Cynthia’s Lechon that is: “A little past Lots for Less and Shell, around 50-100 lang, it’s to your left if going to Sasa. Puro glass siya.”
I had to ask if the place serves veggies and fish since my buddy for the night is Miggy who doesn’t eat meat.
Yes, he said.
So, off we went, and it was easy to find.
I did recall that it was once the Cynthia’s Lechon but that it looked different then. It has the all-glass structure when it became another restaurant I can no longer recall the name, before it became Pippin’s.
You will be welcomed by a Valentine’s Tree. It’s a Christmas tree that now has hearts as ornaments.
Once you’re in the main dining area, you will notice one other oddity: the mismatched dining chairs. Not one chair is the same at any one table.
Just as mismatched is their blurb: Ribs. Hito. Imbao. Spaghetti.
There were just two tables when we arrived, although that may be because we were a little bit late for the regular dinner time.
One table at our far right with around four people, and a table in front of me with two men and a woman who appeared like they are from Customs or have dealings with Customs by the topics of their conversation.
We ordered gising-gising (P155), just to compare it with the gising-gising we ordered several weeks ago and because Igy mentioned it, the Binukadkad na Pla-pla (P140), and Imbao soup (P125).
The imbao soup had lots of ginger and had a good number of imbao shells for its price. The gising-gising had more ground pork than I would have preferred but very much tasted like the gising-gising we tried a few weeks back. The Binukadkad na Pla-pla is crispy and yes, tasty. Many restos in town think that a bland battered tilapia is good because you can always dip it in your sawsawan anyway. I still like some flavor and spices in my crispy fried tilapia, thank you.
Service was fast. The waitress was very friendly. She was trying to entice us with their dessert, except that when food tasting with just one friend, you always end up more stuffed than you plan to be, and thus we had no space for dessert.
It could have been tempting though, had we not stuffed ourselves too much because their menu has a long list of desserts including pistachio sans rival, mango sans rival, ultimate carrot cake, blueberry cheesecake, homemade caramel cheesecake, oatmeal raisin cookie, zuccoto ice cream cake, triple chocolate brownies and many more.
The menu says their desserts are all handcrafted by their pastry chef. That should really be worth a second look.
