INDEED, how the mighty fall, and fall mightily. They stand as if they own the world, they walk as if they are the conquering warrior and they look out into the universe thinking and believing none can touch them. But alas they fall and they fall mightily.
Our terrier is named Scrappy. He is a proud dog, arrogant even. He gets his way, he is a spoiled dog who struts around the house and the yard like some kind of king out of the Game of Thrones. He is bathed, he is fed like royalty. He is the king. Not anymore. He has fallen, well at least for now. Why? Because of the heat. No not the summer heat but the heat of Scrappy's companion. Buchi, our Pomeranian.
Well, our female Pomeranian who is now in heat for the first time. And our poor Scrappy has now sensed it and now the once mighty Scrappy has been reduced to a pathetic, trying hard, whimpering even desperate fool of a dog. Simply put, where Buchi is, Scrappy is.
When Buchi is asleep, the poor Scrappy stares at her. When Buchi runs around, the poor Scrappy follows her like a nut. When Buchi is in her cage, poor Scrappy insists in joining her which is so unbecoming of him because he hates the cage. (In fact when it is time to put him in the cage, he growls and complains but nevertheless he goes in.) But now, he voluntarily goes into the cage, well as long as Buchi is there. Poor dog, wawa Scrappy.
A few days ago we were having dinner and the dogs were in the yard. Suddenly, we heard a commotion. Buchi was barking aloud and so was Scrappy, well at least his version of a bark. Suddenly, Scrappy's bark became some sort of yelp. We were alarmed and went out to find out what was going on.
Somehow, a stray cat entered our yard and both dogs resented the idea that some other animal, especially a cat at that would dare enter their territory. So both dogs were barking at the cat which by the way was feisty and stood its ground. Two dogs barking and one cat hissing. Well not exactly because Buchi the female dog was closest to the cat and Scrappy our male dog was at the back of Buchi. Barking too I might add but still at the back of Buchi. Why at the back you may ask? Two reasons.
The first happened a few months back. This was not the first time a stray cat entered the yard. Somehow a cat got in and Scrappy being the dog that he is charged at the cat which by the way was larger than him. In the process of his bravado charge, he got scratched and he yelped and retreated leaving the cat to the bigger Buchi which fought off the cat.
Hence from then on, Scrappy would bark and yelp but always behind Buchi.
The second reason. Well while Buchi was barking at the cat, Scrappy was also doing the same thing BUT and that is a really big BUT, this time he had another reason. It was not for self preservation BUT for pleasure.
You see while Buchi was barking, Scrappy was slowly mounting and humping Buchi. He figured that while Buchi was distracted he could somehow sneak in because he had tried for days with no success! But Buchi is Buchi and no is no and Scrappy got what he deserved. Buchi fended him off and when she did, she went back to the cat. Poor Scrappy, foiled again. Curses!
Today, Scrappy is a changed dog. He does not anymore, he just follows Buchi around. He does not play like he used to because he has other games in mind. We asked our vet how long this would last and we were told to be patient. Apparently, it takes some time. Today we look at Scrappy with merciful eyes because he looks so pitiful and pathetic. Poor Scrappy, the proud is now a slave. We just hope it ends soon because we miss the proud Scrappy.
