HIGHLIGHTING the diverse cultures of Mindanao, the Philippine Obstetrical & Gynecological Society (Foundation) Inc. (Pogs) held its 2014 Midyear Convention and Scientific Seminar on May 1-3 at the SMX Convention Center Davao, dubbed as “Ignite the Senses”.
Pogs chair of the organizing committee Dr. Veronica Mallari-Deniega said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao that this year’s convention is a way of re-introducing Mindanao.
“We brought Pogs Convention here in Davao to let our co-Filipinos see the beauty of Mindanao. This annual convention is also one of our ways to create camaraderie among the Obstetricians and Gynecologists of the country,” Deniega said.
This year’s convention also brings in for the first time, the award-winning independent film director Brillante Mendoza whose film Thy Womb was presented among the doctors in the big screen of SM Lanang Cinema 6 prior to the opening ceremony. Mendoza was elated to be invited in the event.
Mendoza said that the movie, highlighting the cultural practices of the Badjao in Tawi-Tawi, from courtship, marriage, giving birth and even their business practices, is something that every Filipino should take great pride of for the uniqueness that sets diverse Filipino cultures apart from the others.
“Karangalan sa akin na i-share ang culture na maipagmamalaki natin sa buong mundo na kahit tayong mga Pilipino ay wala masyadong alam tungkol sa tunay na buhay ng mga Badjao,” he said.
Pogs members shared their insights during the open forum and admired director Mendoza’s aesthetic aspect of creating the movie which earned citations such as La Navicella Venezia Cinema Award, the P. Nazareno Taddei Award - Special Mention, and the Bisato d' Oro Award for Best Actress for Nora Aunor given by an independent Italian critics group called Premio Della Critica Indipendiente.
The event was also witnessed by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who lauded Pogs for choosing the city as venue of the convention, “We would like to thank you for choosing Davao City. Mindanao is a turbulent place but we are able to stabilize the situation here in the city. All tribes are presented here and we are glad that you chose us,” Duterte said.
Seminars, forums and more informative and fun activities were conducted in the succeeding days participated by hundreds of members of Pogs and respected speakers such as Dr. Celia C. Castillo FPCP, the corporate research and development director of Davao Doctors Hospital, Dr. Rosendo R. Roque FPOGS, the chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the San Juan de Dios Hospital, Lizabel Garcia-Holganza, president and chair of the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines, Guillermo Luz, the private sector co-chair of the National Competitiveness Council, Dr. Divina Cristy Redondo, the head of the Medical Nutrition and Weight Management Center of Premiere Medical Center in Nueva Ecija, Dr. Rosa Gandahariu Alvero Carpio DPBA, FPSA, a director of the board of the Philippine Society of Anesthesiology and an associate professor of the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Dr. Nemuel S. Fajutagana MPHEd, a professor of health professions education at the National Teachers Training Center for the Health Professions of the University of the Philippines-Manila and Prof. Katherine Claudette K. Avelino-Tandoc, an assistant professor of the De La Salle University-Manila.
This year’s Midyear convention organizing committee is made up of Drs. Rowena Auxillos, the over-all chair, Helen Grace Te-Santos, the Pogs Southern Mindanao Chapter Regional Director, and Veronica Mallari-Deniega, the chair of the organizing committee.
