Habitat for Humanity paints Kapitan Tomas Elementary's walls-A A +A

HABITAT for Humanity joined in on Brigada Eskwela last May 19, painting Kapitan Tomas Elementary School's stretch of walls along C. Bangoy (Ponciano street).
More than 500 volunteers showed up for Habitat for Humanity to paint a total of 65 walls, painting an image depicting Filipino families' daily lives, including them helping out each other in the community.
The image, as Habitat for Humanity's Resource Development Manager Dolly Serranillo said, symbolizes their advocacy, which is to "build communities and transform lives."
Renowned Mindanaoan artist Kublai Millan himself helped in creating the concept for the sketch, which was painted by the volunteers using paints provided by Davies Paints Philippines, one of the partners for the event.
Habitat also partnered with Ateneo de Davao University, San Pedro College, John Paul II College of Davao, Davao Merchant Marine Academy, Ford Academy of the Arts, University of the Immaculate Conception, Holy Cross of Davao College and University of the Southeastern Philippines. These schools sent volunteers to help in the painting activity.
Councilor Leo Avila III was also a partner in the event, as he also sent artists to aid in the painting event.
Other partners in the event were Goldilocks, Annipie, Nanay Bebeng's, Aquasoft, Crystal Clear, Nature's Spring, ABS-CBN, MOR, DXAB, Kookel's, and Sun.Star Davao.
Serranillo said they chose Kapitan Tomas as the venue as their wall is located in one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city, and since the mural will stand for three years, the mural will be a long standing symbol of their advocacy and hopefully help them draw in more volunteers and help.
As of now, Serranillo shared that they are still helping those hit by typhoon Sendong and have also given assistance to those affected by the fire in Boulevard last month. She added that they are still accepting donations and funds to aid them as they extend help to their beneficiaries.
Habitat for Humanity ambassador Atty. Jason Joyce called for people to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, saying, "(I) would like to invite the youth of Davao Region to be part of our Habitat family." "Be part of the org for the people that builds happiness, hope and positive values for the community," he added.
Atty. Abdussabor B. Sawadjaan Jr., Habitat's head of regional operations in Davao and Caraga, said that even though their main advocacy is building homes, "(it) doesn't mean we can't do other activities geared toward spreading the advocacy."
He also shared that they are also currently working on repairing and helping day care centers, and if people want to help out, they may approach Habitat for Humanity's office.
Aspiring volunteers may contact Dolly Serranillo at email@example.com or call their office at 285-2494 or 284-2714.
