DEAR Dr. Fritz,

Hi, doc. Please call me Agatha K. of Davao City. My problem is my stretch marks. I have learned that they can be removed by simple exfoliation at home. But, I don’t know how to do it.

I hope you can help me. Thanks and more power.

Dear Agatha K. of Davao City,

Yes, you have heard it right. Exfoliation can help restore the “injured” skin on your body, like stretch marks and scars. As a matter of fact, even some old marks can be eliminated with this simple procedure that you can do at home.

Exfoliation may not remove completely the stretch marks but, it can boost the effectiveness of stretch mark creams, lotions and gels.

You have to remember that since stretch marks may be seen at the surface of the skin, they penetrate to the several layers of the skin, thus, they cannot just be removed by scrubbing off the top layer of your skin. But, this doesn’t mean that you’ll have to give up right away. You have to give tons of patience to get the rewards you’ve been longing for.

Stretch marks can just be like the scars. They will fade over time as they will be replaced with new and healthy skin underneath. Again, exfoliation can help a lot in this process.

Before you start your exfoliation regimen, select the cream to treat your problem areas. This should be gentle and non-irritating. After, you have selected the appropriate cream for you, you can now move on to the best exfoliation process that suits you.

Keep in mind that since stretch marks are sensitive in nature, you should choose an exfoliating product that is made from natural products. Shy away from chemical peels. Instead, choose oatmeal or even kosher salt or sugar.

Try them first on a small portion of your skin to make sure you are not sensitive to it. You can try the back portion of your wrist. You can also use exfoliating soaps along with a loofah or pumice stone.

After you exfoliated your stretch marks, rinse them and gently dry them. Use warm water instead of hot water. Use a soft cloth to dry and don’t rub on them, rather, just pat them gently or they may bleed if you are rough on them.

Now, when the area is completely dry, you can now apply your treatment lotion or cream. This can now penetrate the skin more effectively since you have removed the dead skin layer that would have prevented your cream or your lotion to penetrate. You have to follow the directions. If you are told to use only a small amount, then, apply as directed since a larger amount will not mean that the treatment will be more effective.

You have also to make sure that you allow time for the cream to be absorbed before you put on your clothes or else, you will waste the treatment since it will be absorbed on the fabric instead on your skin.

Don’t also do it everyday or more often than three days. They can make your skin super sensitive and may give you infections and even chronic skin conditions, instead.

If you don’t see any redness, then you can repeat the exfoliation process after three days. And for the meantime, you can continue applying the cream or lotion as directed.

But, if you are not satisfied with the result, then, you can change your cream or lotion for this may have greater effect on your problem. Now, if you still don’t see the results you’ve been longing for, it’s time to see your dermatologist.
.
Good luck!

Dr. Fritz
