THE last time this writer met Miguel was early December of last year when he came to Davao City for a short hometown visit. We had a sumptuous breakfast at Café Marco in Marco Polo Davao where he and his family was billeted.

He was busy preparing for secondary school and was intent in concentrating on his studies. However, as luck would have it, the 13-year -old lad was contacted by Apl de Ap of the Black Eyed Peas to join him in the Rebuild Philippines Concert to be held in the Greek Theater in Hollywood.

Rebuild Philippines is a charity concert featuring Filipino-American and other international artists, it aims to help rebuild parts of the Philippines that were devastated by typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan.

Miguel would be joining Black Eyed Peas (minus Fergie who is currently on leave to spend time with her newborn son), American Idol first runner up Jessica Sanchez, Chad Hugo, Slapshock, Jabbawockeez and BEP prodigy W3 The Future among many other performers pitching in for Yolanda relief efforts.

"I feel very blessed and so excited, a bit nervous but more excited!. Apl said that he will bring me around Hollywood and eat some Tacos!” Miguel said in his Facebook private message, when asked about this golden opportunity.

Miguel’s participation also features a Singaporean collaboration as he will be singing his own original arrangement of the song “One Hope, One Voice, written by Singaporean social entrepreneur Elim Chew and singer Cat Ong.

During the concert which was held last June 8, Miguel Antonio wowed the crowd despite experiencing technical difficulty (his keyboard malfunctioned) the tweener displayed the coolness and the chops of a veteran performer particularly with his rendition of Billy Joel’s Piano Man.

The crowd shouted for more of Miguel but time constraints as the Greek Theater follows a strict shutdown schedule and the presence of other performers limited Miguel to only two songs. But nevertheless his performance endeared him to new admirers in the other side of the world.
And one of those admirers is no less than Black Eyed Peas member Taboo who tweeted Miguel “I’m a big fan of yours- we should do something-u killed it on Sunday even with technical difficulties.”

“I can hear my heartbeat beating so fast that night! wasn't able to take my own video because i was shaking! “recalls Miguel’s mom Katherine during his performance.

More nervewracking for Katherine was the keyboard malfunction, which had the technical crew rushing on stage to repair the problem.

“He handled it really well.. That’s why the organizers and the sound crew were so impressed by him..he didn’t panic and was even smiling on stage.” Katherine recalls that nervous moment during the concert.

Sam Vedanaigam Miguel’s dad once explained to this writer that once Miguel is on stage he becomes a different person. He feeds on the energy of the audience and takes the stage as his own turf.

Currently, Miguel and the Vedanaigams are currently enjoying their American vacation. The Hollywood exposure augurs well for this talented teener.
