Organic (and community-made)

WE’RE not going to go to any restaurant today, instead, we will browse through the shelves of the Got heart Community Shop at The Peak of Gaisano Mall of Davao after I discovered that it has already stocked up on locally-produced food items and other household basics.

First off, this is where you can get your supply of organically grown brown, red, and black rice and healthy coco sugar and a lot more.

After it opened in July with a shop full of artworks from local artists (this writer included!), food stocks from participating communities have now filled up the shop’s shelves, and you can browse along for interesting finds like organic brown, red, and black rice from Northern Luzon, all the types of health tea you would want to have, like ginger, turmeric, and even mangosteen (leaves or rind), and then you have the locally-produced chocolates. There are all kinds of jams of fruits that Mindanao is known for – including the ubiquitous durian jam.
Browse on further and you find the chili powder that Davao Oriental is known for and all the products of Kablon Farms from Tupi in South Cotabato. There’s coco sugar and turmeric tea with coco sugar from the Panabo-based Healthy Sweets, and a lot more (including locally-manufactured detergent, and beauty soaps – check out the beer soap! It really smells like beer).

It’s interesting to look through the packages as it brings you to different places in Mindanao.
My prized find is the Got Heart Tinman doll garbed in T’boli costume.

Got Heart goes from community to community to check out on possible products to display, and opens the shop for consignment with some specific conditions:

1. Must be produced by the community or an organized group. Must have a socially-responsible story behind i.e. you have made outreach programs from your sales, you have adopted a community or you have hired the community dwellers in the production and/or manufacturing your products.

2. Must fall under organic, indigenous or natural.

3. Locally produced (nationwide).

For interested consignors, you can text 09064962153 or PM through the Got Heart Facebook account https://www.facebook.com/gotheartcommunityshop.

The endeavor that found the opening of its first shop in White Plains, Quezon City is borne from the livelihood development programs of Got Heart Foundation Inc., which reached out to indigenous communities and helped the people produce their indigenous products befitting upscale standards, thereby upgrading the profitability of the community as well.

The shop thus also sells brass jewelries hand-casted by T’boli artisans, and T’boli blouses as well, if you’re looking for authentic tops. And of course, it’s also a gallery for local artists.

Got Heart adheres to principles of fair trade such that everything edible in the shop should not be genetically modified and does not contain chemicals, pesticides and other harmful substances.

Did we interest you enough now? Drop by at Gaisano Mall’s The Peak. It’s right beside Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and the area where they sell fresh fruits for snacks. It’s open from 1:30 – 9 p.m. only.
