IN A country like the Philippines where family is deemed as the most important, nothing will compare to the dilemma of a married couple who cannot bear a child.
Luckily enough, the first in vitro fertilization (IVF) facility in Mindanao has opened last October 28 at the Brokenshire Women's Center, Brokenshire Hospital, Madapo, Davao City.
It is a medical procedure where the egg cell and the sperm cell are extracted from the couple to join them in the laboratory.
After the fertilized egg or embryo is formed which takes about two weeks to develop, it will be injected in the uterus of the woman.
The IVF lounge is an umbrella facility of the Fertility Care Center Davao (Fccd) which aims to provide a more affordable operation than those offered in IVF facilities in Luzon and Mindanao.
In fact towards the end of the year when the Asean integration will be fully implemented, the IVF facility in Davao will be eyed as a magnet to those couples as far as in the Sulawesi region in Indonesia.
On the data provided by the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and the Philippine Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, there is a 10%-12% increase of infertility amongst the couples.
The package rate of the operation depends on the age of the woman. Tho those ageing 30 years old, it will cost them P285,000 to proceed; to those who are 31-35 years old, it will be P350,000; 36-40 years old will amount to P385,000. Additional P10,000 will be charged to those who ages beyond 40.
In the future, the facility will be offering assistance inloan application to cater the C and B brackets of the society.
According to Dr. Ma. Lourdes Cabling, there is a slimmer rate of success for older women in this procedure as the egg cells lessen as we age.
On the issue of the overpopulation in the country, Dr. Veronica Deniega reasoned that having children is a human right.
"Those couples without children belong to a segment of the population, which must not be neglected by the country," she added.
