IN CELEBRATION of the National Children’s Book Reading Day, SM Supermalls, including SM City Davao and SM Lanang Premier in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), Vibal Publishing and National Book Store, conducted a storytelling activity for grade school children on July 19.

The activity was held to commemorate the publication of Dr. Jose Rizal’s classic, “Ang Pagong at Ang Matsing.”

At SM Lanang Premier, guest storytellers were Councilor Mabel Acosta and TV News Anchor Sarah Hilomen-Velasco – read children’s books and brought characters into life at a storytelling activity held at the mall Atrium.

Councilor Mabel Acosta read “Ang Dalawang Haring Siga” by Unicef while Sarah Hilomen-Velasco read “Marne and Marino” by Vibal Publishing to grade school students from University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC).

Participating students from UIC were given free story books to jumpstart their daily habit of reading. They also received free snacks courtesy of Krispy Kreme.

At SM City Davao students from Little Pearls of Heaven and Euro-Asia Child Care Center, participated the event.

Over 70 kids joined the activity and received free items from event partners Vibal Publishing, Unicef and the National Bookstore.

Mutyang Davao 2009 lawyer Resci Angelli Rizada and spoken word artist Karla Stefan Singson were the celebrity readers, for the featured stories, “Binibining Bettina Bote” and “Ang Sabi ni Nanay, Ang Sabi ng Tatay.”

The story-telling activity was part of SM Foundation and SM Cares’ Program for Children and Youth, which promotes literacy and encourages the young to cultivate a love for reading at an early age.

The National Children’s Book Reading Day is celebrated annually every 3rd Tuesday of July across SM Supermalls in the Philippines as well as in China.

It is in line with the company’s corporate social responsibility to make its malls not just child-friendly but also be a venue for learning, where children can learn traditional values and develop their full potential.

“At present, SM Supermalls serves as much as 4 million customers a day, with almost half being children. We believe that learning is not restricted inside the four corners of a classroom, as we care for each and every child that enters our mall by promoting their rights, prioritizing their safety and enhancing their learning experience in a child-friendly environment,” SM City Davao mall manager Lynette Lopez shared.

SM Supermalls extend its service to the community through its corporate social responsibility program SM Cares with dedicated committees on women and children, the differently-abled, elderly, and the environment.
