THE Inawayan Barangay Council in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur unanimously approved on Tuesday the construction of the AboitizPower Corporation's proposed 300-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in the village.

Inawayan barangay captain Rafael Manos said the council approved the "Resolution Interposing no Objection" to the AboitizPower's P25-billion proposed project.

Manos said all seven councilors voted in favor of the plant, citing the benefits to their locality.

"Aboitiz has showed to us that the proposed plant has enough facilities to mitigate its effects to the environment," Manos said.

The Aboitiz project also got the nod of six out of seven Binugao barangay councilors on Friday. Antonio Saniel, Binugao barangay captain, said they are convinced that the coal-fired power plant is safe.

Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte also favors Aboitiz's project but leaves the decision to the City Council.
