KIDAPAWAN CITY -- The police here have a new partner in its war against terrorism: a Belgian Shepherd Dog Malinois.
The trained dog, according to handler Police Officer 1 Newton Fajardo, costs the government P500,000. It's one of the few dogs the Philippine National Police (PNP) bought last year from breeders abroad.
The Belgian Shepherd Dog Malinois, recognized in the United States under the name "Belgian Malinois," is the same type used by US Navy Seals dog in locating al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
In a memorandum of agreement signed Monday, the City Government agreed to shoulder the food, vitamins, and milk of the K9. It is assigned at the Kidapawan City police.
Fajardo who handles "Hans Fort", the name given to the Belgian Malinois, said the dog is trained in doing room and ground search of firearms and other explosives through sniffing.
He considers his partner as a working dog trained also for personal protection, and search and rescue.
Fajardo and Hans Fort had become partners since February 9 this year.
Both underwent training on bomb detection at the K9 Exponent School in Cavite City for four months.
